NCCI Modifiers

National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI)

The set of edits developed by CMS where two procedures could not be performed at the same patient encounter because the two procedures were mutually exclusive based on anatomic, temporal, or gender considerations.

97140 – manual therapy techniques. For this code, NCCI indicates that 95851, 95852, 97164, 97168, 97018, 97124, 97530, 97750, and 99186 are all linked services when billed in combination with 97140. So, if you bill any of these codes with 97140, you’ll receive payment for only 97140.

If an edit allows use of NCCI-associated modifiers, the two procedure codes may be reported together. NCCI-associated modifiers may not be used to bypass an edit unless the criteria for use of the modifier are met.
